Well, a touch North of Seattle, in Shoreline, WA.

Here's my airgun history:

First one was a Daisy lever BB gun, model unknown, circa 1970. I still remember the great sound it made when you poured a bunch of BBs in it. Soon, the quest for more power and accuracy led me to the Crosman 760XL, and with the rifled barrel and pellets it taught me a lot about shooting.

After that, I recall a Crosman 766 and a Daisy Powerline 880, but they never quite hooked me like that little 760 did. I was allowed to shoot a Benjamin pump pistol when visiting my great grandmothers...she used it on jays and bats. I think I still have that old Benjamin, but it's a box of parts waiting for a round toit.

The airgun shooting stopped when I joined the Marines. I qualified expert and became a marksmanship instructor, so shooting that 760 must not have done me wrong.

After awhile I got the itch again and picked up an RWS 34 in .177. Shot that quite a bit, then I got married...and it seems like no time at all has passed and my oldest boy just recently got his first airgun, a Gamo Delta.

I started poking around looking for info on an older WH 50s that I was gifted some time ago, wondering if replacing the leather seals was a job I could do or if there was somewhere to have it done, and here I am.

Looking forward to catching up on the airgun scene again...

Hello Bloodybucket,

Welcome to AirgunAdvice
It nice to see you are getting back int the Airgun game!
That HW 50 with leather piston seal...
It all depends on how much time and how important it to you to keep it original!!!
First you need to disassemble it and check the condition of the leather seal.
If it is in good shape you can use some neats-foot oil to soften it up. Then re grease lightly and put her back together. If not, you might find someone who has them still....

But if you want to replace it with a synthetic seal go here:

http://www.jgairguns.biz/catalog/index.php?cPath=78_377_387
You will need the new seal and adapter(see description under new seal)

I Hope this helps and you enjoy our site!!

Thanks for the tip! I may construct a compressor and have at it. I'm more concerned with keeping the WH50S in shooting shape than keeping it original. The first owner put a Williams WGRS peep on it, and cut a notch in the stock to fit it, so it's not pristine as is. It shoots pretty well (no chrono here, and the iron sights are a limit with my aging eyeballs) but it does smoke some.

I'm already thinking about lining up a starling hunt. The thought of spending some time with the lad afield sure sounds good to me.

Thanks again!

I have a feeling the boy will outgrow that Gamo Delta sooner rather than later.

Well without a chronograph, it makes it hard to judge how the piston seal is really doing!
But if the smoking is the concern, it is possible the leather seal just needs a good cleaning!!
It is possible the person who owned it before add oil to the compression chamber... A major No-No!! The will lead to dieseling and smoke!!

Good Luck,
Stuart
